2023-2024 Hot Chocolate Friday - Maths

The pitter patter of tiny feet outside the staff room, anxious voices ready to impress all with their mathematical knowledge, a heightening sense of anticipation at the potential consumption of custard creams - it can only be Hot Chocolate Friday.

Our group today were discussing the Maths curriculum, focussing on the level of challenge since changing to the White Rose Curriculum. Aleena loved the change as, "the lessons get more difficult as we go forward, especially the reasoning". Aayan S backed this up when exclaiming "the lessons are more challenging but I can choose the sheets that I work on by looking at the 'thumbs up, thumbs down and no thumbs' symbols".

A discussion followed on what makes a good mathematician and how mathematical vocabulary is taught at Dairy Meadow. It was reassuring to see that the children are making good use of their working walls and that all the vocabulary needed to embed those disciplinary skills is evident on the resources. We all came to conclusion that these were the key skills needed to be a good mathematician:

* Number fluency

* Working systematically

* Being fearless in the face of reasoning

* Using mastery to test our skills.

A big thank you to my special guests this week - Talia, Aarav, Aayan S, Sulaiman, Aleena, Sashvin, Eesha, Aayan H and Aadhya.
