Dairy Meadow Primary and Nursery School

A Visit from the RNLI

Wednesday the 7th February 2024 saw a very special visitor navigate some choppy waters to visit Dairy Meadow - Jan Harris from the RNLI (Royal National Lifeboats Institute) - the charity that saves lives at sea.

Jan was here to address the possible dangers of being around water and to promote water safety with the children. During the assembly the children understood the key messages;

  • Stop and Think
  • Stay together
  • Float
  • Call 999

Year 2 and Year 4 also took part in a workshop which covered areas from their current geography topics, Coastline and Misty Mountain, Winding River.

Year 2, identified dangers at the seaside as well as understanding how certain flags at the beach help keep us safe.

Year 4, discussed safety in open water (rivers, canals, lakes and reservoirs), cold water shock and the 'Float to live' message.

 Remember, if you find yourself in water unexpectantly, fight your instincts and float until the effects of cold water shock pass. If you see someone else in trouble in water, call 999 and ask for the coastguard. NEVER jump in the water  to help!
