Count on Us Maths Challenge
Tuesday 16th May 2023 saw Miss Khan take a band of intrepid mathematicians into central London to take part in the Count on Us Maths Challenge - an initiative by the Mayor Of London's office.
8 children have been taking part in weekly maths club. Safaa (Y5), Ahiyan (Y5) and Sashvin (y4) were selected for the heats trip. We travelled to Thomas Buxton Primary School in Whitechapel where the children competed with several schools from across London for the finals. The challenges included using dominoes and pentominoes to create number grids and shapes, code breaking and a mental maths game called 24. Children were scored based on speed, how many challenges they completed and how many rounds they won. Skills included problem solving, team work and perseverance.
The Count on Us Primary Maths Challenge is an exciting pan-London programme for primary schools which engages pupils in Years 4 and 5 with a range of maths games designed to challenge and inspire. In 2022, nearly 4,000 students were involved in the Count on Us Primary Challenge, with 100% of teachers reporting a positive impact on their pupils’ attitude towards maths and 90% agreeing it improves performance in maths.
We might not have taken first place but it was truly a wonderful experience for everyone involved.
