Hot Chocolate Friday - Geography

Friday 24th March 2023 saw a welcome return to our pupil voice session - Hot Chocolate Friday (there was orange squash and Ribena because Mr Feldman forgot to buy the hot chocolate!). We were also joined by Miss Steadman to discuss the Geography curriculum here at Dairy Meadow.

It was clear from our discussions that children loved Geography and were enthused by the curriculum on offer. Aayan in Year 2 says, "I love learning about coastlines and am thinking of going to the beach." Sean and Jaskeerat in Year 6 were clearly getting a lot out of their Frozen Kingdoms topic as the told me all about glaciers, "They are moving every day across the Polar regions" and the Inuit communities, "There are special people in the Arctic and Antarctic who have their own culture".

Both Miss Steadman and myself were heartened that children really understood some of the key skills in the Geography curriculum. Children commented favourably on: research, mapwork, human/physical features and even topography (thank you Aisha!). Subject specific vocabulary seemed embedded with Belina able to talk confidently on tectonic plates and Jasmehar showing her expertise on contour lines.

One part of our discussion that gave me great joy was that our children were aware of why we teach Geography. Haroon says it's important to, "learn about different environments," whilst Lavand spoke passionately about, "learning about the world."

Can't wait for our next session after Easter! Thank you to all our junior geographers and cartographers for attending.
