Hot Chocolate Friday - Reading
I know this is the update you've been waiting for! Friday 24th November 2023 saw another fantastic discussion of an area of our curriculum over hot drinks and custard creams - this session saw us delve deeper into the reading curriculum at Dairy Meadow.
It's clear that our children love the texts they are exploring in Guided Reading. Ravneet and Jama are inspired by the other cultures present in Anisha the Accidental Detective and enjoy the 'funny dilemmas'. Abisha and Mohammed are linking The Boy at the Back of the Class with the experiences of children refugees from Syria. The Year 4 and 6 texts, How to Train Your Dragon and Kensuke's Kingdom, provide the children with ample opportunity for writing opportunities - especially adventure stories.
We spoke about how the Guided Reading lessons in class can promote reading skills. Safa especially enjoys the vocabulary games, whilst Gunreet and Moustafa understand how annotation can help us read between the lines. I was impressed how children appreciate the different reading strands of - meaning, inference, retrieval, comparison, language and summarising.
We all agreed that there were loads of opportunities for reading out loud and how if we had visitors from outer space they could tell Dairy Meadow was a reading school (look at our books, Miss Spilsted's reading club, use of the fluency scale, visits to the Dominion Centre).
A big thank you to my following friends for spending a lovely afternoon with me: Ravneet, Jama, Gunreet, Moustafa, Abisha, Mohammed M, Safaa, Aima and Stancio.
