Hot Chocolate Friday - Science

Hot Chocolate Friday on the 25th November 2022 was a meeting of our junior scientists (and Mr Feldman) as we picked apart our Science curriculum, as well as getting side tracked about a discussion about global warming!

It was clear that our young people really enjoy the practical side of Science, with all of Mr F's guests being able to remember and experiment they have performed this academic year. Ekamjot remembered, "putting baking soda and vinegar in a bottle to test pneumatics", whilst Rajbeer enthused about "testing the sogginess of a potato chip". Clement went a little more cerebral by celebrating the fact that, "In Science, some of it's mathematical and some of it's environmental". I was really proud that children were able to link their learning with DT and Geography as well as understanding that Science plays a large role in future employment. Safa summed it up best by saying that "it makes sense of the world around us".

Year 5 have clearly enjoyed their topic on Earth and Space as Ahiyan commented that, "it makes me feel like an astronomer" before proceeding to baffle me with his knowledge of Copernicus and Gallileo. Safa was pleased to be studying the circulatory system as it built on her knowledge of organs in Year 4 plus, it will help her to achieve her dream of becoming a nurse.

Our junior scientists were all able to explain how the skills of observation, annotation, recording and analysis can help them in future lives. Our next steps will be to take our learning outside the classroom on more occasions and make more use of our surroundings to explore nature and climate change.

A big thank you to: Neriah, Rajbeer, Buali, Baljeevan, Ahiyan, Ekamjot, Clement and Safaa for joining me.
