Hot Chocolate Thursday - Art
Our Pupil Voice session, Hot Chocolate Thursday (moved because Mr F has a careers event to host on Friday afternoon!) met over orange squash and Oreo's to discuss the intent of our Art curriculum. This week he was joined by the Art champion Miss Geddes.
We started off by discussing what art is and the point in studying it is. All our children agreed that it was a process with the irrepressible Ariyah-Rose explaining how she "sketches things before she does them in best", Alexis chimed in by saying that art is a great way to show off her "creativity and shares my feelings". All the children agreed that art was an enjoyable activity and they were fond of looking at works of art from famous artists - Prycheira especially enjoyed the line drawings of Picasso.
Children could all activate prior knowledge from previous years, Eshal gave a great account of how to create tints, tones and shades. Anaya enjoyed looking at portraits and was able to infer meaning from a given subject, linking nicely with history. We all agreed that art isn't just painting and drawing - sculpture, collage and digital art was also discussed.
In the midst of our creative juices flowing, we all agreed that these are some of the skills of an artist:
* Being accurate
* Not giving up - being resilient when things don't look like how you intended.
* Taking risks - being creative and enjoying yourself.
* Observing
* Open mindedness - allowing yourself to be inspired by others.
A big thank you to the sculptors, curators and critics of the future that joined me for a lovely session - Eshal, Prycheira, Anaya, Alexis, Eishmeen, Belina, Hamza and Ariyah-Rose. Next time - Maths!
