World of Work - a Year 6 Immersive Experience

At Dairy Meadow we always try to inspire our children to 'Dream Big'. We're proud that our curriculum that builds skills and knowledge - paving the way for future success and readying our intrepid learners for careers in the big wide world. However, this got me thinking, how can we expect our junior scientists, mathematicians and historians to become the surgeons, accountants and archivists of the future if they don't know how to apply for a job? This is where Holland House and the amazing Dr Sharon Wright came into play.

Friday 9th June 2023 saw all of Year 6 take the Elizabeth Line to Liverpool Street to experience what it would be like to be a city worker for the day. After marvelling at the glass skyscrapers we reached our destination, Holland House. Some of our children have visited before, understanding just why the building that housed a Dutch shipping company is so vitally important. What all of Year 6 didn't realise is that a 50 storey skyscraper is planned to be built behind by the developers Bentall Green Oak - consequently we thought it would be a phenomenal experience if the children had to apply for a job at the company.

Thankfully, our children were guided by some amazing volunteers:

Aude - the architect responsible for the development,

Rebecca - the town planner responsible for negotiations between council and developer,

Emily - responsible for the communications between all the different departments.

Under this expert tutelage, our young CEO's were able to understand a little bit more about the construction business. After they had a CV writing workshop that culminated in some mock interviews. Sharon was amazed at the confidence and eloquence of all of our potential employees! I don't want to spoil the results but I'm fairly certain that all of Year 6 have employment starting in September!

A huge THANK YOU to everyone who helped our children dream big, understanding that background, colour, class and creed should be no barrier to employment. Heartfelt thanks again to Sharon for being such a great friend to Dairy Meadow.
