Dairy Meadow Primary and Nursery School

Year 4 Canal Trip

Even on a blisteringly cold winter day, the learning at Dairy Meadow does not stop. Our brave potomologists (my new favourite word), went out to investigate the local waterways. The purpose of the visit to the Grand Union Canal was to kick start the geography unit (Misty Mountain, Winding River).

The towpath trip was a guided walk which focused on the importance of the canal as transport routes and the significance of the trade route from London to Birmingham. After an introduction at Norwood Top Lock the pupils watched a lock demonstration and then continued to walk the towpath (east) to Three Bridges. During this walk and talk experience the children were hunting for historical evidence, wildlife and answering questions about the local area.

This was a great opportunity for the children to experience the link to their science learning 'Habitats and Food Chains' and demonstrate their previous water safety knowledge. SAFE- Stay Away From the Edge.
