Year 4 Towpath Visit

As part of our Geography learning about Rivers and Mountains, Year 4 participated in a local towpath trip which focused on the importance of canals as transport routes and well as hunting for historical evidence and identifying wildlife and habitats in our local area.

After an introduction at Norwood top lock, the pupils were split into two groups, one to watch and take part in a lock demonstration and the other to walk the towpath (east) to Three Bridges and further down the Hanwell Flight. Each group then returned and switched over.

During this trip, children were able to use and talk about their prior knowledge and understanding from a recent Geography unit as well as, gaining hands on- fieldwork experience to extend their learning and development.

The children completed an 'explorers' checklist' during the visit and were on the lookout for historical evidence and wildlife such as; bridge marks, lock cottages, mallard ducks (male and female), coots and moorhens.

You can see from our photos that we all had an amazing outdoor learning experience!
