Year 5 are tunnelling with HS2!

This week Year 5 learnt all about Tunnelling.  We looked at the history of tunnelling, where it was done by hand, and compared it to modern day technology using machinery such as the Tunnelling Boring Machine (TBM).  We learnt that tunnelling has had an abundance of benefits to society, being cheaper, safer and making travel more direct for the public.   The children were astonished that the TBM is around 2000 tonnes which is equivalent to 340 elephants and that it is the size of 1 and a half football pitches!  Year 5 were full of questions which were answered very thoroughly by the Engineers of HS2.
